More Tips on Traveling with Baby/Toddler

Nimim.
Jenkeissä mitä mainioin sivu ko. tarkoitukseen on www.diapers.com

Here are some more things I have learned on traveling with a small child:
  • Remember to mention your need for a baby cot when making the reservation and confirm they have one available. Smal hotels may have only a limited number of cribs and they go first-come-first-serve basis. It is also comfortable to have it all set in your room when you arrive, especially if you will arrive to the hotel late at night.
  • If you rent a car, check ahead that the car rental company has the type and size of a child seat you will beed. This is a surprisingly difficult thing to get right, even in Europe. We have had several discussions with car rentals about safety matters "No, my 3 months old baby may not be seated on a face rearing car seat which is meant for children over 12 kilos". Once the car rentals delivered us a wrong type of car seat 4 times and we lost more than 3 hours in the process. Note that standards vary in different continents and for example the European Isofix system might not be compatible in the USA. In more exotic countries the taxis may lack the normal seat belt, not to mention a baby seat. So do your home work in advance and be either prepared to 1) travel without a proper protection for you child or 2) choose a "safe"destination until your child is bigger.  If the taxi driver has hidden the seat belt (as the case might be for example in Mexico) it is totally ok to ask the driver to pull them back.
  • It is not granted in all countries that restaurants have baby high chairs available or they have them enough. Especially,  if you are traveling alone, bring a light travel high chair that will fit even to your diaper bag.  If you want to enjoy the tranquility of your room, hotel's room service may bring a high chair on request.  The first picture is from a in-room dinner we had on our terrace in California.
  • If you want to enjoy good food, white tablecloths, beautiful scenery and outstanding service also when traveling with a child, go to fine dining restaurant just after the busiest lunch time or just before the dinner time begins. In an empty dining room you will get better service, no need to worry about disturbing the neighboring table parties and the staff is friendlier.
  • If you need baby food, diapers and other baby supplies of a specific brand but there is limited space in your suitcase, check the online shops in your destination and order the needed supplies for the hotel address where you will stay the first night. Just inform the hotel before hand so they can wait for your order to arrive and deliver it to your room.  The best web site for traveling in the US is www.diapers.com

Often one must go far to see the good things near...several things have made me happy lately, here are some of them:  luminous nights, absolutely beautiful nature, happy moments with the beloved family, face-to-face conversations with dear friends, playing with grandma, grandpa, aunts and godparents, tea by the garden fireplace, swimming in the ocean, walking bare feet, sweet forest berries, having coffee at the market square, standup paddleboarding, Finnish sauna, jogging in the forest, Pancho's first visit to the golf course, a visit to the Moomin World, fresh and high quality fish, fenced playgrounds, free public transport for the ones travelling baby strollers, oat and rye bread, carelian pies...Finnish summer: there is no better place to be in July than in Finland.

Suvisaaristo kuittaa, over and out.

And all this got even better when Mr. Pepper returned from his business trip to Brazil and arrived to Finland to spend the next 3 weeks with us!

Sea, Sun, Salmon, Sheeps

***
I am a girl from Turku archipelago and despite the fact that I lived several years in Helsinki and we have spent every summer past 7 years in Suvisaaristo in Espoo,  I've never really got into the front islands in front of the capital.

Kunnes...kyläilimme Panchon kanssa ystäviemme luona Tapiolassa ja aurinkoisen päivän kunniaksi, he veivät meidät päiväretkelle Isoon Vasikkasaareen. Otimme bussin Haukilahteen, hyppäsimme laiturilta saaristolaisveneen kyytiin ja vain n. 10 minuutin merimatkan päästä, astuimme maihin hurmaavaan saareen!
***
Until... Pancho and I visited friends in Tapiola and one sunny Saturday they took us for a day trip to Iso Vasikkasaari. We took a bus to Haukilahti, hopped on board on a lovely, old-school archipelago boat which took us in about 10 minutes to a charming island with so many things to do and see.

Koska saavuimme saarelle lounasaikaan, nappasimme pöydän saaren ainoan (muita ei tarvita) ravintolan terassilta. Pojat nauttivat lohikeittoa ja maitoa, mamat savulohisalaattia ja kylmää Grüner Veltlineria ja Pellegrinoa.
***
We arrived on lunch time and got a table from the sunny terrace of the island's only restaurant. While the boys had salmon soup and milk, the mamas had a smoked salmon salad and cold Grüner Veltliner and San Pellegrino.

***
While waiting for the food, we went to see the sheeps on the island. There are three very calm and soft sheeps and the boys loved them.

***
After the meal we had a walk across the island and visited a small harbor for those who want to visit the island with their own boats. The pier was perfect for sun bathing, BBQ and just enjoying the Finnish Summer at its best.
***
There is also a beach, cafe, play area for children, many places where to BBQ, toilets, showers and a huge green area suitable for volley ball, foot ball, frisbee, sun bathing, chilling out...If you are looking for a relaxed but well organized island for a warm and sunny summer day, I can recommend Iso Vasikkasaari!

Our Decor Philosophy

***
When Pepper and I met and started dating, his home was white and shiny. If there was something else than white and shiny, it was black and shiny. My single home was filled with stuff from all over the world and I liked muted colors. My apartment was a mini-Mexico contra Pepper's simple Scandinavia. Even though our decor worlds were far away from each other at the beginning, along the years we have found a suitable combo to decor our home and create a style that feels good and cozy for both of us.

Pictures above from our guest bedroom. My grandmother's father made the little table for her when she got married to my grandfather. The rose pillow is from Swedish brand Linom, the fabric of the other darker rose pillow I bought in Thailand and my sister made me two pillows and curtains out of it, the light grey pillows are from HM Home and the white pillows are from my mother.

According to our decor philosophy the furnitures should be practical, beautiful, timeless and have a soul or at least character and preferably have a story. We love design classic but we are not afraid of trying new designer's work or buy things from flea markets or abroad if we like how they look like.

The sofa is from Furninova, the coffee table and TV stand are hand made by Pepper. The masks are  from Mexico, two white carpets from Ikea. The floor lamp behind the sofa is Swiss design Topolino S and the big floor lamp is Arco Castiglioni.

Lounge Chair from Eames together with Saarinen Tulip Side Table and Flos Kelvin Led Floor Lamp. The painting is a wedding gift from my father-in-law. I love fresh flowers and tend to have them at least in the living room, dining room and in bath room.

Pidämme vanhan ja uuden, kiiltävän ja rosoisen, harmonisen ja värikkään yhdistelmästä. Yleisesti ottaen ihailen tanskalaisten tyyliä sisustaa koteja. Tanskalaisista puheen ollen, naapurissamme asuu ihana tanskalainen perhe ja olen saanut luvan käydä kuvaamassa heidän kotiaan. Pysykäähän kuulolla.
***
We love the combination of old and new, shiny and rough, white and colors. Especially I admire how Danish people decor their homes. Speaking of Danes, a lovely Danish family lives just around the corner and I have been permitted to take some pictures of their chic home. Stay tuned!

The table is from Pepper's auntie, the chairs are Arne Jacobsen Series 7, the lamp is Moooi Random Light, the Buddha statue is a souvenir from Cambodia and the painting is made by Pepper's grandfather, carpet from Ikea.

Beware of Skiers

We spent the first days of our summer holiday visiting my sister and her family in Kuopio. I noticed that people in Kuopio love skiing. Can't blame them, having this type of landscape and views, skiing has to be lovely even with a bad slide.

11 Things About Me

Hurmaava Mia Mia's Lemons blogista haastoi minut jo aikoja sitten listaamaan 11 asiaa minusta ja esitti siihen päälle 11 lisäkysymystä.

Tässä siis 11 asiaa minusta:

7. Jos pitää valita syönkö pääruoan lisäksi alkuruoan vai jälkiruoan, valitsen lähes poikkeuksetta alkuruoan.

8. Pidän blineistä, graavilohesta, mädistä, juustoista, maksapateista, tryffelistä, kookoksesta, mintusta, sitruunasorpetista ja shampanjasta.

9. Taitoni ompelussa ovat hyvin rajoittuneet. Jopa napin ompeleminen sujuu tahmeasti.

10. Pienenä toiveammattini oli tarjoilija.

11. Olen hypännyt laskuvarjolla, riippuliitänyt, matkustanut yksin maailman ääriin, pitänyt jaguaarin pentua sylissä, esiintynyt monelle sadalle hengelle,  uinut Miamin hai-rikkaissa vesissä ja synnyttänyt ilman kipulääkkeitä mutta pelkään puluja.

12. Vaikka tehtävänannossa luki 11 asiaa minusta, 12 on onnenlukuni, tulkoon tämä tieto tähän vielä  jokeriksi perään.

Sitten Mian 11 bonus kysymykstä:

1. Mikä on ihanin: aamu, päivä, ilta vai yö?
Ihanin on sunnuntain aamut, keskiviikon päivät, (jälleen) sunnuntain illat ja lauantain yöt.

3. Paras korkokenkämerkki?
Oih, olen valtavan huono ostamaan kenkiä enkä osaa mainita yhtä tiettyä. Merkin sijasta kiinnitän huomiota kulloiseenkin käsillä olevaan kenkien tarpeeseen.

4. Koska olet viimeksi kehunut itseäsi?
Aamulla.

5. Mikä on lempi urheilulajisi (tai vaikka liike kuntosalilla)?
Tämä on helppo: Zumba. Voi ihanuus mikä liikunnan riemu!

6. Mikä on suosikkiosa vartalossasi ja miksi?
Onko hymy vartalon osa?

7. Suosikki kasaribiisi?
Taitaa olla juuri ennen kasaria mutta ensimmäiseksi tuli mieleen Blame it on the Boogie, oikealta vuosiluvulta mainittakoon Wake me Up Before you Go Go jonka tahdissa esiinnyin elämäni ensimmäisessä (ja ainoassa) jumppakilpailussa.

8. Salainen paheesi? (Joka ei kohta enää ole salainen)
No se hampaiden pesu :).

9. Mitä valitset kaupan karkkihyllystä ennen kassalle menoa kotimatkanamiksi?
En oikeastaan osta kotimatkanameja. Jos ostan karkkia, siihen liittyy leffan katsominen ja siinä tapauksessa pussissa on irtokarkkeja, pääasiassa salmiakkia.

Lovely and sweet  Mia from Mia's Lemons blog challenged me  a long time ago to list 11 things about me plus she asked a couple of bonus questions.

Here we go, 11 things about me:

1. I brush my teeth several times a day. Naturally as soon as I wake up in the morning and before I go to bed in the evening but also before leaving home (anywhere), before an important meetings, before a party, after a meal. Clean teeth, good vibes, better self confidence.

2. My plan was to go as an exchange student to South Africa but due to a sudden last-minute change, I ended up in Puerto Rico in the Caribbean. I learned Spanish, my soul and spirit become latin americanized and my life took a new direction.

3. I was accepted to Finnair's flight attendant training (the most comprehensive tests and interviews ever) but after all I ended up working for a Mexican law firm instead.

4. There was a time when I knew how to write two of Japanese three alphabets: Katakana and Hirakana and I loved to write them. I am no longer able to write even my own name.

5. I avoid the company of jealous, negative and/or pessimistic people.

6. My philosophy for life is: If you was to die tomorrow, I would die happy knowing that I have done all those things that have been possible to do by then. Although I would miss a lot of experiences and some of the dreams may not have come true yet, I would have a happy feeling that I have achieved all what has been possible on these years and these resources.

7. If I have to choose between appetizers or dessert, I choose almost always the appetizer.

8. I like coconuts, mint, lemon sorbet, rare fish, cheese, truffle and champagne.

9. I have very limited talent on sewing, for me it is hard to sew even a button.

10. As a child, my dream job was a waitress.

11. I have jumped with a parachute, done para gliding, traveled alone to end of the world, held a baby jaguar in my arms, had a presentation in front of hundreds of people, swam in Miami's shark rich waters, given birth without pain killers but I'm afraid of pigeons.

12. Even thought the task was to list 11 things about me, 12 is my lucky number so let this be a bonus information.

Then Mia's questions:

1. What do you like most: morning, day, evening or night?
The most wonderful are Sunday mornings, Wednesday days, (again) Sunday evenings and Saturday nights.

2. Do you use a colorful socks?
My socks are mainly natural, black or gray (white sports socks) but tights can be found in many colors.

3. What is your favorite high heel brand?
Oh, I am not very good at buying shoes so I am afraid I am not able to one specific brand.

4. When was the last time you praised yourself?
This morning.

5. What is your favorite sport?
This is easy: Zumba. What a joyful moves and feeling!

6. What is your favorite part of your body and why?
Is smile a part of body? If so, I'll say smile. A smile creates good moods, opens doors, make things happen and the more you use it, the more you will get it back.

7. What is your favorite 80's song?
The first song that came to my mind is just before the 80's but this is from the right decade.

8. Your secret bad habit? (which will soon no longer be a secret)
Well, that teeth brushing :).

9. What kind of candies you buy?
I seldom buy candies but if I do, it is somehow related to watching a movie and if available, I like salty licorice.

10. When you add mascara do you open your mouth?
Oops, I did not know if I do. Had to wait until the morning and try. It remained closed.

11. Do you collect souvenirs or other treasures from your travels?
I collect black and white photographs from flea markets which catch my eye and make my imagination fly and to create happy or funny stories behind the pictures.

10+ Best Practices for Travelling with Baby/Toddler

Pancho ja minä lähdemme huomenna Suomeen kesälomalle. Nuoresta iästään huolimatta (vuosi ja 10 kk) huomisaamun lento on Panchon 29. lento. Niistä 19 olemme lentäneet kahdestaan, ilman Pepperiä. Olemme käyneet Panchon kanssa kolmella eri mantereella, istuneet tuhansia kilometrejä autossa, (10 päivän road trip San Diegosta San Franciscoon lienee pisin) ja matkustaneet pitkiä matkoja junassa. Minulta kysytään usein vinkkejä lapsen kanssa matkustamiseen, joten tänään pakkaamisen lomassa listasin mitä olen parin vuoden aikana oppinut.
***
Tomorrow Pancho and I will travel to Finland to spend the summer with family and friends. Despite of his young age (22 months), tomorrow's flight will be Pancho's 29th. 19 of those flights I have taken alone with him without Pepper. We have travelled in three continents, driven thousands of kilometers in a car, including a 10 days road trip from San Diego to San Francisco and spent tens of hours in trains. I am often asked for tips on travelling with a baby/toddler so while I was packing today, I listed what I have learnt during the past two years. Here is a summary.

Mikäli koneessa on tilaa, pyydä check-in virkailijaa varaamaan myös viereinen istumapaikka. Tarvitset tilaa kaikelle kamalle ja kun lapsi osaa istua, on helpottavaa laittaa hänet hetkeksi sylistä omalle tuolille.

3. Expectations management on tärkeää: Selitä lapselle (jopa sylivauvalle) hyvissä ajoin etukäteen mitä lentokentällä ja lennolla tapahtuu. Toista tarina useasti ennen matkaa. Matkan edetessä selitä lapselle missä vaiheessa milloinkin ollaan ja kertaa mitä seuraavaksi tapahtuu.

4. Varaudu jo ennen matkaa siihen, että kaikki lentoyhtiöt/lentokentät eivät anna ottaa lastenvaunuja portille. Erityisesti Finnair on asiassa nihkeä.

Varaa pitkille matkoille muutama ylimääräinen setti vaihtovaatteita. Pidä aina käden ulottuvilla wipseja.

7. Mikäli matkustat lapsen kanssa yksin, suurin osa lentoemännistä pitää vauvaa mielellään vessakäyntisi aikana. Mikäli kohdallesi osuu kiireinen emo, katso muiden matkustajien joukosta ystävällisen ja isovanhemman näköinen ihminen ja pyydä reippaasti apua. Älä kuitenkaan koskaan anna lasta vieraalle paikassa, jossa joku saattaisi viedä lapsen. Suljettu lentokone lienee suht turvallinen.

8. Pitkillä lennoilla muista vieressä, edessä ja takana istuvia pienellä lahjapussilla, johon voit sujauttaa vaikka pari suklaata ja korvatulpat. Koristele kauniisti ja liitä kortti "I might be good, I might be bad, sorry if I make you mad. I hope these chocolates will sweeten up your flight. Br, [lapsen nimi ja ikä] ".

9. Varaa lennolle uusi lelu tai kirja, jonka uutuusarvo pitää mielenkiinnon yllä normaalia kauemmin.

+ Mikäli matkustat kohteeseen, johon on paljon aikaeroa, aloita lapsen rytmin muuttaminen jo päiviä ennen matkaa.

***
1. If possible, fly outside of peak hours when the airports more quiet and the flights are emptier. Avoid Monday mornings and Friday afternoons. If the flight is not fully-booked, ask at the check-in if the seat next to you can be blocked. You will appreciate the space for either all your stuff or just to put the child on his own seat for a moment (instead of holding the baby in your arms the whole fligh).

2.  On take-offs and landings hold the baby always facing front. In case of an emergeny braking,  holding the baby rear facing might be life-threatening.

3. Expectations management is the key: Explain to your child (even to a small baby) well in advance step by step what will happen on the airport and during the flight. Repeat the story several times before the trip. Explain again during the trip and  remind him/her what will happen next.

4. Be aware that all airlines/airports do not allow you to take the strollers to the gate. According to my experience Finnair is one of the worst. Bring a baby carrier/sling and make sure that you will be able to carry your  hand luggage even when having your baby in a carrier/toddler on your back.  Many airports may either loan or rent small strollers to be used at the airport but most of them are meant for babies who are already able to sit by themselves. However, some airlines may allow you to take an infant car seat on the plane, even if the strollers are not allowed. Note, especially if you are traveling alone with the baby, a car seat together with the baby weight a lot. Although the car seat is convenient to have the baby sit on it and on the plane you may place it on the seat next to you but carrying it across the airport might get a hard excersise. Also note that some airlines allow you to check-in either a stroller or a car seat but some of them allow both. Just make sure what you are allowed to take so you can avoid any upleasant (and expensive) surprises on the check-in.

5. If you are traveling alone with a baby, take a small blanket or other cover, on which you can lay the baby when you need to have both of your hands free or for example use the airport restrooms.

6. Bring an extra pair of clothes, not just for your child but also for yourself. Your child might vomit, pee, throw food or pour drinks on him/you. For longer trips, take at least two sets of extra clothes. Keep wipes always close by.

7. If you travel alone with a child, most of the flight attendants are kind and willing to help you on what ever you need, including holding your baby while you use the toilet. However, if the flight attendants are busy, look for a friendly and "grandmom" looking passenger and ask for help. (Note, never leave your child with unknown persons anywhere where somebody can take the baby. Airplanes with closed doors should be safe).

8. For long-haul flights prepare a small gift bag with some chocolates and ear plugs with a note:  "I might be good, I might be bad, sorry if I make you mad. I hope these chocolates will sweeten up your flight, [name of the baby and age]" and hand a bag for other passengers next, behind and in front of you.

9. Buy a new toy or a book for the flight.  The novelty of a new toy/book will keep the interest of the child longer.

10. In order to avoid ear ache, make sure that your baby is drinking and swallowing during the takeoff and landing. This can be done by breastfeeding, giving the bottle or providing fruit puree in a poche.

+ If you will travel to a destination with big time difference, start adapting your child's rhytm days before the trip. Even a couple of hours can help significantly the adaptation on arrival.

Luottokamat mukana matkoilla:
  • Manduca-kantoreppu.
Lisää loistavia vinkkejä yhdestä lempiblogistani A Cup of Jo:sta: Travelling with Baby ja 10 Ways to Entertain a Toddler on a Plane.

I never travel without:
  • Manduca Baby Carrier. Manduca is so easy to use, it is compact,  soft and easy to carry the child either on the front or on the back. Remember to practise putting child on and taking him/her off at home before you go.
  • I bought for Pancho a monkey backpack which is in fact a child harness.  There are many opinions on the use of child harness but I rather let the child walk on a harness than have him to sit on a stroller against his will. The harness has saved us from beign ran over by a car, getting lost, runnig away and above all, from a kidnapping attent (more about the subject later). The monkey backpack is super cute, it is soft, Pancho loves it and a little boy with a monkey on his back gets always a lot of positive comments wherever we go.
  • Aquaint, a 100% natural sanitizing water. It is a natural product that does not contain any alcohol or other harmful chemicals. You may even clean a pacifier and put it back to the child's mouth.
More great tips from one of my favorite blogs A Cup of Jo: Travelling with Baby ja 10 Ways to Entertain a Toddler on a Plane. In particular, I totally agree with Joanna's advice to sit on different rows with the other parent and change the babysitter on duty in every 2-3 hours (depending on the lenght of the flight):  Both parents will have possibility to  watch a movie, take a nap, read, listen to music, eat and drink. Also, the child will have some variety and  the change of environment and the nurse will help him not to get bored. Tried this and can warmly recommend!

I will come back with more tips on arrivals, what to take into account on hotels, restaurants and shopd when travelling with a baby/toddler. I would love to hear your best practises so please share on the comment box.

Happy and Safe Travels!

Love in Portofino

Portofino is a chic little harbour village known to be a legendary place for celebrities and multi-millionares to spend their holidays there. This could be seen on the shopping possibilities in this tiny village: it had mini-mini-mini stores of Dior, Hermes, Louis Vuitton and Giorgio Armani.

I was not on the shopping mood but instead I wanted to see some breath taking views so while the men of our family went to play some ball, I took a hike...

Silkkimekko ja korkokengät olivat varusteina ok ylöspäin mentäessä. Fiilistelin maisemia, annoin lempeän tuulen tuivertaa tukkaa, hengitin raikasta meri-ilmaa ja olin onnellinen ja kiitollinen upeasta päivästä, huikeasta ympäristöstä ja pienen seikkailun tuomasta vapauden tunteesta.

A silk dress and high heels were ok when climbing up. I loved the view, I let a gentle wind to blow my hair, I took a deep breaths of the fresh air, smelled the sea and was happy and grateful for the gorgeous day, amazing surroundings and the feeling of freedom created by my little adventure.

Otin kuvia linnasta ja linnasta avautuvista maisemista...

Some picture taking up in the castle...

What goes up, must often come down. Easier planned than done.  For some reason my 12-cents high heels were not so practical going downhill on a natural stone path as they had been when going up. I hung on the rails (on the steepest parts of the path with two hands) and focused on placing my feet and high heels on a convenient step. My silk dress was clued to my sweaty skin, my wind-blown hair kept coming on my eyes and my big SLR hanging on my shoulder made it even more difficult to keep the balance. I got many looks from the other visitors wearing their  sporty sneakers, t-shirts and shorts. If I could read minds, the story would have been something like "Oh no, what a blonde! What was she thinking this morning when dressing up?". I did not mind the looks, I took "all is cool, everything under control"-look on my face, took deep breaths and did my best to land as much with dignity as it was possible taken into account the circumstances. Whenever I felt like calling my husband to come and carry me down, I stopped, gather strength from the view below and hummed this.
