More Tips on Traveling with Baby/Toddler

Nimim.
Jenkeissä mitä mainioin sivu ko. tarkoitukseen on www.diapers.com

Here are some more things I have learned on traveling with a small child:
  • Remember to mention your need for a baby cot when making the reservation and confirm they have one available. Smal hotels may have only a limited number of cribs and they go first-come-first-serve basis. It is also comfortable to have it all set in your room when you arrive, especially if you will arrive to the hotel late at night.
  • If you rent a car, check ahead that the car rental company has the type and size of a child seat you will beed. This is a surprisingly difficult thing to get right, even in Europe. We have had several discussions with car rentals about safety matters "No, my 3 months old baby may not be seated on a face rearing car seat which is meant for children over 12 kilos". Once the car rentals delivered us a wrong type of car seat 4 times and we lost more than 3 hours in the process. Note that standards vary in different continents and for example the European Isofix system might not be compatible in the USA. In more exotic countries the taxis may lack the normal seat belt, not to mention a baby seat. So do your home work in advance and be either prepared to 1) travel without a proper protection for you child or 2) choose a "safe"destination until your child is bigger.  If the taxi driver has hidden the seat belt (as the case might be for example in Mexico) it is totally ok to ask the driver to pull them back.
  • It is not granted in all countries that restaurants have baby high chairs available or they have them enough. Especially,  if you are traveling alone, bring a light travel high chair that will fit even to your diaper bag.  If you want to enjoy the tranquility of your room, hotel's room service may bring a high chair on request.  The first picture is from a in-room dinner we had on our terrace in California.
  • If you want to enjoy good food, white tablecloths, beautiful scenery and outstanding service also when traveling with a child, go to fine dining restaurant just after the busiest lunch time or just before the dinner time begins. In an empty dining room you will get better service, no need to worry about disturbing the neighboring table parties and the staff is friendlier.
  • If you need baby food, diapers and other baby supplies of a specific brand but there is limited space in your suitcase, check the online shops in your destination and order the needed supplies for the hotel address where you will stay the first night. Just inform the hotel before hand so they can wait for your order to arrive and deliver it to your room.  The best web site for traveling in the US is www.diapers.com

10+ Best Practices for Travelling with Baby/Toddler

Pancho ja minä lähdemme huomenna Suomeen kesälomalle. Nuoresta iästään huolimatta (vuosi ja 10 kk) huomisaamun lento on Panchon 29. lento. Niistä 19 olemme lentäneet kahdestaan, ilman Pepperiä. Olemme käyneet Panchon kanssa kolmella eri mantereella, istuneet tuhansia kilometrejä autossa, (10 päivän road trip San Diegosta San Franciscoon lienee pisin) ja matkustaneet pitkiä matkoja junassa. Minulta kysytään usein vinkkejä lapsen kanssa matkustamiseen, joten tänään pakkaamisen lomassa listasin mitä olen parin vuoden aikana oppinut.
***
Tomorrow Pancho and I will travel to Finland to spend the summer with family and friends. Despite of his young age (22 months), tomorrow's flight will be Pancho's 29th. 19 of those flights I have taken alone with him without Pepper. We have travelled in three continents, driven thousands of kilometers in a car, including a 10 days road trip from San Diego to San Francisco and spent tens of hours in trains. I am often asked for tips on travelling with a baby/toddler so while I was packing today, I listed what I have learnt during the past two years. Here is a summary.

Mikäli koneessa on tilaa, pyydä check-in virkailijaa varaamaan myös viereinen istumapaikka. Tarvitset tilaa kaikelle kamalle ja kun lapsi osaa istua, on helpottavaa laittaa hänet hetkeksi sylistä omalle tuolille.

3. Expectations management on tärkeää: Selitä lapselle (jopa sylivauvalle) hyvissä ajoin etukäteen mitä lentokentällä ja lennolla tapahtuu. Toista tarina useasti ennen matkaa. Matkan edetessä selitä lapselle missä vaiheessa milloinkin ollaan ja kertaa mitä seuraavaksi tapahtuu.

4. Varaudu jo ennen matkaa siihen, että kaikki lentoyhtiöt/lentokentät eivät anna ottaa lastenvaunuja portille. Erityisesti Finnair on asiassa nihkeä.

Varaa pitkille matkoille muutama ylimääräinen setti vaihtovaatteita. Pidä aina käden ulottuvilla wipseja.

7. Mikäli matkustat lapsen kanssa yksin, suurin osa lentoemännistä pitää vauvaa mielellään vessakäyntisi aikana. Mikäli kohdallesi osuu kiireinen emo, katso muiden matkustajien joukosta ystävällisen ja isovanhemman näköinen ihminen ja pyydä reippaasti apua. Älä kuitenkaan koskaan anna lasta vieraalle paikassa, jossa joku saattaisi viedä lapsen. Suljettu lentokone lienee suht turvallinen.

8. Pitkillä lennoilla muista vieressä, edessä ja takana istuvia pienellä lahjapussilla, johon voit sujauttaa vaikka pari suklaata ja korvatulpat. Koristele kauniisti ja liitä kortti "I might be good, I might be bad, sorry if I make you mad. I hope these chocolates will sweeten up your flight. Br, [lapsen nimi ja ikä] ".

9. Varaa lennolle uusi lelu tai kirja, jonka uutuusarvo pitää mielenkiinnon yllä normaalia kauemmin.

+ Mikäli matkustat kohteeseen, johon on paljon aikaeroa, aloita lapsen rytmin muuttaminen jo päiviä ennen matkaa.

***
1. If possible, fly outside of peak hours when the airports more quiet and the flights are emptier. Avoid Monday mornings and Friday afternoons. If the flight is not fully-booked, ask at the check-in if the seat next to you can be blocked. You will appreciate the space for either all your stuff or just to put the child on his own seat for a moment (instead of holding the baby in your arms the whole fligh).

2.  On take-offs and landings hold the baby always facing front. In case of an emergeny braking,  holding the baby rear facing might be life-threatening.

3. Expectations management is the key: Explain to your child (even to a small baby) well in advance step by step what will happen on the airport and during the flight. Repeat the story several times before the trip. Explain again during the trip and  remind him/her what will happen next.

4. Be aware that all airlines/airports do not allow you to take the strollers to the gate. According to my experience Finnair is one of the worst. Bring a baby carrier/sling and make sure that you will be able to carry your  hand luggage even when having your baby in a carrier/toddler on your back.  Many airports may either loan or rent small strollers to be used at the airport but most of them are meant for babies who are already able to sit by themselves. However, some airlines may allow you to take an infant car seat on the plane, even if the strollers are not allowed. Note, especially if you are traveling alone with the baby, a car seat together with the baby weight a lot. Although the car seat is convenient to have the baby sit on it and on the plane you may place it on the seat next to you but carrying it across the airport might get a hard excersise. Also note that some airlines allow you to check-in either a stroller or a car seat but some of them allow both. Just make sure what you are allowed to take so you can avoid any upleasant (and expensive) surprises on the check-in.

5. If you are traveling alone with a baby, take a small blanket or other cover, on which you can lay the baby when you need to have both of your hands free or for example use the airport restrooms.

6. Bring an extra pair of clothes, not just for your child but also for yourself. Your child might vomit, pee, throw food or pour drinks on him/you. For longer trips, take at least two sets of extra clothes. Keep wipes always close by.

7. If you travel alone with a child, most of the flight attendants are kind and willing to help you on what ever you need, including holding your baby while you use the toilet. However, if the flight attendants are busy, look for a friendly and "grandmom" looking passenger and ask for help. (Note, never leave your child with unknown persons anywhere where somebody can take the baby. Airplanes with closed doors should be safe).

8. For long-haul flights prepare a small gift bag with some chocolates and ear plugs with a note:  "I might be good, I might be bad, sorry if I make you mad. I hope these chocolates will sweeten up your flight, [name of the baby and age]" and hand a bag for other passengers next, behind and in front of you.

9. Buy a new toy or a book for the flight.  The novelty of a new toy/book will keep the interest of the child longer.

10. In order to avoid ear ache, make sure that your baby is drinking and swallowing during the takeoff and landing. This can be done by breastfeeding, giving the bottle or providing fruit puree in a poche.

+ If you will travel to a destination with big time difference, start adapting your child's rhytm days before the trip. Even a couple of hours can help significantly the adaptation on arrival.

Luottokamat mukana matkoilla:
  • Manduca-kantoreppu.
Lisää loistavia vinkkejä yhdestä lempiblogistani A Cup of Jo:sta: Travelling with Baby ja 10 Ways to Entertain a Toddler on a Plane.

I never travel without:
  • Manduca Baby Carrier. Manduca is so easy to use, it is compact,  soft and easy to carry the child either on the front or on the back. Remember to practise putting child on and taking him/her off at home before you go.
  • I bought for Pancho a monkey backpack which is in fact a child harness There are many opinions on the use of child harness but I rather let the child walk on a harness than have him to sit on a stroller against his will. The harness has saved us from beign ran over by a car, getting lost, runnig away and above all, from a kidnapping attent (more about the subject later). The monkey backpack is super cute, it is soft, Pancho loves it and a little boy with a monkey on his back gets always a lot of positive comments wherever we go.
  • Aquaint, a 100% natural sanitizing water. It is a natural product that does not contain any alcohol or other harmful chemicals. You may even clean a pacifier and put it back to the child's mouth.
More great tips from one of my favorite blogs A Cup of Jo: Travelling with Baby ja 10 Ways to Entertain a Toddler on a Plane. In particular, I totally agree with Joanna's advice to sit on different rows with the other parent and change the babysitter on duty in every 2-3 hours (depending on the lenght of the flight):  Both parents will have possibility to  watch a movie, take a nap, read, listen to music, eat and drink. Also, the child will have some variety and  the change of environment and the nurse will help him not to get bored. Tried this and can warmly recommend!

I will come back with more tips on arrivals, what to take into account on hotels, restaurants and shopd when travelling with a baby/toddler. I would love to hear your best practises so please share on the comment box.

Happy and Safe Travels!

Fun in the Snow

Hyvää Laskiais-tiistaita Tokiosta! Täällä ei ole lumesta tietoakaan mutta suomalaisia perinteitä kunnioittaen, pari lumista kuvaa viime viikon Kuopion reissulta, jolloin Pancho laski elämänsä ensimmäisen kerran pulkalla; kerran kohtuullista vauhtia tädin sylissä, kerran kovaa kummisedän sylissä ja kerran toooodella hitaasti mamis-city-mamin sylissä. Onneksi lapsi sai lainaksi kunnon varusteet ja nautti lumesta vaikka mami kaupunkiasussaan vähän himmailikin.
***
There are no Shrove Tuesday festivities in Tokyo but as the traditional way of celebrating Shrovetide in Finland is sledging, I wanted to share these pictures from last week when we visited Kuopio. It was the first time Pancho went sledging. He had a speedy ride with his godfather, a medium speed ride with his aunt and veeeeeery slow ride with his city-mummy. Pancho borrowed some winter gear from his cousins so he truly enjoyed the snow and did not mind mummy holding on.

Oh Murphy...

Iso, iso, ISO hatunnosto yksinhuoltajille. Ja toistan: Oi tukiverkko, miten sinua näinä ajanjaksoina kaipaankaan.

Last week I made my first trip alone with Pancho to Germany. We had a great day until Pancho started to feel bad in a supermarket and turned hot in minutes. I left all grocery shopping and run to a train to get him asap back to Switzerland and straight to see a doctor.  Mr. Pepper had to work clock round and I was alone to take care of Pancho's first fever.

Today Mr. Pepper left for a business trip for a week. The first day at home alone was great until Pancho  started to feel bad, went completely pale and his lips turned into blue while he was eating his evening oatmeal. I picked him up and before I even noticed, the floor, walls and the doors were covered with vomit. I have not taken care of vomiting child before so had to call my sister, a mother of three children for advices how to survive alone the night.

Our bedroom is now covered with towels, I have clean pajamas, blankets, sheets etc ready and I have been mentally prepared that in case I have time to catch him, I will let him vomit against my chest. It is (apparently) much easier to change my clothes and take a shower than clean vomit from bed, walls, curtains, carpets...my respect single parents, my respect! And I want to repeat myself: Oh,  these are the moments when I most miss my friends and family in Finland.

Life Lately

Tällä viikolla Pancho on lisäksi siirtynyt vaunuista rattaisiin, tutustunut kiviin, saanut ystävälliseltä rouvalta raitiovaunussa ilmapallon, päästänyt pallon taivaan tuuliin, haukannut supermarketissa kevätsipulin vartta, nähnyt elämänsä ensimmäisen lehmän, alkanut osoitella koiria, noussut itse istumaan, pitänyt kovia konttausasentotreenejä juuri ennen nukahtamista ja osoittanut alati kasvavaa kiinnostusta avaimiin, aurinkolaseihin, lompakoihin ja kännyköihin.

Me aikuiset vietimme juhannusviikkoa arkisissa merkeissä, perjantaina sentään söimme illallisen terassilla kynttilän valossa ja kaipasimme ystäviämme Suomen suvessa.

***

If the previous week was sweaty and busy, this week has been cooler and calmer. My dear brave Panchito was incredibly patient with all the art show visits so we took it easy this week and made more his favorite things.

We went to play in a park with an Australian-British little girl (and her mother). The girl is 6 months older than Pancho so he just admired how she was walking and playing in the sand box. I got an invitation to expat-moms’ book club.

We went to children’s flea market with an Australian-German little boy (and her mother) and found 3 nice children’s books in English. One of them is about Spot baking a cake, another is about Maisy playing hide and seek and the third about a soft bunny getting ready for the bed. I was told that the mother of the little boy also likes baking cakes and that they have a paddling pool on their terrace. We got an invitation for swimming and for a spice cake.

I went to gym and as Pancho was the only child in the child park, the nanny allowed him to go to the ball pool. There were no limits to his joy and happiness!

We went to our every Wednesday morning music group to Gymboree. Pancho was excited about playing the drum. We have also moved from licking the rhythm sticks to clapping the rhythm sticks so there is clear progress in his musical development.

In addition Pancho has switched from pram to push chair, has become acquaint with stones, got a balloon from a nice lady in the tram, let the balloon in the air, took a bite of spring onion stem in a supermarket, saw a cow for the first time in his life, started to point dogs on the streets, lift himself to sit and has been showing increasing interest in keys, sun glasses, wallets and mobile phones. Until now he has known to waive when someone says “bye bye” or “hei hei” but this week he also started to waive when hearing “tschüss”.

We adults had quite an ordinary Mid Summer week though on Friday we did have our dinner in a candle light in our terrace and missed all our dear friends in Finland.  Yesterday Mr. Pepper was in charge of taking care of the baby so I escaped to city center just by myself. I spent (an expensive) hour in sales of a nice boutique. On the cashier I mentioned (just as a small talk) that my friend Mrs. T recommended me this boutique and immediately I was handed over an invitation to very exclusive fashion show for VIP clients.

We (the whole family) also had a lovely long lunch with Mrs. T, her husband and their Little M. Today we went to a family BBQ organized by the company Mr. Pepper works for. Some weeks ago we were in a restaurant and there was a Mexican family in a table near to us. The same family was in the BBQ today! We exchanged contact details and I got an invitation to meet other Latin moms.

Next week brings a grocery shopping trip to Germany, some friends for a coffee, getting to know a new park and on Thursday we will be off to summer holidays. OH JEAH!

Chicken who wants to see in the dark and Moko who travels the world

Tällaisten kirjojen löytäminen on osoittautunut yllättävän vaikeaksi.

Onneksi minulla on aikaa metsästää, sillä tällä hetkellä meillä luetaan vielä kivoja kuvakirjoja, joissa kurkitaan läppien alle ja selvitetään minne pikku Myy on piiloutunut. Painellaan nappeja ja riemastutaan aina yhtä yllättyneesti, kun metsän eläimet alkavat soittaa suloisia sointuja. Hihkutaan Maisan sirkus tempuille.

Alla pari yllä mainitut kriteerit täyttävää suosikkiani, joiden sivuja pienet sormet jo innostuneesti kääntelevät. Mami jaksaa tuskin odottaa, että pääsemme lukemaan itse tarinaa.

***
I would like to read to my child books with a funny but educational story plus beautiful and colorful pictures. I would love the story to raise thoughts, questions and discussion. It would be great if he later reads the books as an adult, he would be surprised how many things of life he has learnt from his childhood books. It is surprisingly hard to find books with such criteria.

Luckily I have time for hunting as we are still in the phase where we lift the flaps to help Moomin to find Little My, get excited about music played by animals in the forest and get amazed by Maisy's circus show.

Below are two of my favorites.  The little fingers are already turning the pages but mummy can hardly wait until we can start reading the stories...

Years ago my god daughters were reading Around the World with Mouk by Marc Boutavant I fell in love with the book at first sight and oh, how happy I was when our dear "Coco Banana" got his own (tuned) version as a gift.

French Mouk has his adventures all over the world (such as in Libya, India, Madagascar, Peru and Northern Finland) He learns local culture, tastes exotic foods, makes friends from various religion and ethnical backgrounds, admires nature and learns how to greet people on their own language. Sweet coach travelling and learning of diversity, open minded attitude and world's wonders.

Uudempi tuttavuus on Kristyna Litten Chickens Can't See in the Dark.

Usko unelmaasi.

My latest finding is Chickens Can't See in the Dark by Kristyna Litten.
It is an absolutely lovely story about a little chicken Pippa who wants to see in the dark despite of the fact that Mr. Benedict has clearly stated in the school that chickens can't see in the dark. All the other chickens in Sunnyside farm laugh on Pippa's dreams but she doesn't give up. Pippa goes for her dream and eventually she, together will the other chickens in the farm, is able to see in the dark.

It is a charming (almost a life coach type of) story how you should believe in your dreams. Do not let others to turn you down. Don't give up if you believe in something. Seek advice from experts. Gather as much information as possible. Choose a strategy. Change it if it doesn't work. Go for your dreams and you will get it.

The Secret International Mothers' Club

He jakoivat kanssani intiimejä kertomuksia omista raskauksistaan, synnytyksistään ja lapsistaan. He halusivat antaa kullanarvoisia vinkkejä. He halusivat lahjoittaa vauvantarvikkeita. He halusivat kuulla miten raskauteni etenee. He halusivat auttaa kaikessa raskauteen, synnytykseen ja vauvan saamiseen liittyen.

There is a secret international mothers' club which existence I was not aware of before I got pregnant. All of the sudden my friends, colleagues and relatives, who are mothers, changed their attitude and behavior when I told them about my pregnancy. They started to share their intimate stories about their pregnancies, child birth and children. They wanted to give me valuable advices. They wanted to give me baby related gifts. They wanted to hear how I was doing. They wanted to help me in everything which was related to pregnancy, giving birth and taking care of the baby. They became closer, warmer and more attentive than before.

The phenomenon was also seen in strangers. As my belly grew, women on the streets, shopping malls, airplanes, trains, hotels and other social events started to talk to me about pregnancy and children. I was awarded this positive, un-experienced, at the beginning even confusing, attention, interest and care. I noticed the phenomenon in Finland, Vietnam, Mexico, United States, Holland and Spain. The women were young, middle-aged or old. The age, nationality or culture didn't seem to play any role, the only common factor was that they were mothers too. At some point I understood that I had been silently accepted to this secret international mother's club that I had not even applied for the membership.

Now, when I am a mother, I have noticed the same gut reaction in myself. Whenever I hear news that some of my friends is pregnant, I instantly bond differently and feel instinctive affinity between us (most likely the mother-to-be does not understand it yet though!). This Mothers' Day I felt huge and humble gratefulness for being blessed to be a mother, to have such a great and dear mother and to be part of such beautiful club, where mothers support each other and share their joys, sorrows and everyday tips. Let's all do our share to keep that club alive and active.
