Love in Portofino

***
Portofino is a chic little harbour village known to be a legendary place for celebrities and multi-millionares to spend their holidays there. This could be seen on the shopping possibilities in this tiny village: it had mini-mini-mini stores of Dior, Hermes, Louis Vuitton and Giorgio Armani.

I was not on the shopping mood but instead I wanted to see some breath taking views so while the men of our family went to play some ball, I took a hike...

Silkkimekko ja korkokengät olivat varusteina ok ylöspäin mentäessä. Fiilistelin maisemia, annoin lempeän tuulen tuivertaa tukkaa, hengitin raikasta meri-ilmaa ja olin onnellinen ja kiitollinen upeasta päivästä, huikeasta ympäristöstä ja pienen seikkailun tuomasta vapauden tunteesta.
***
A silk dress and high heels were ok when climbing up. I loved the view, I let a gentle wind to blow my hair, I took a deep breaths of the fresh air, smelled the sea and was happy and grateful for the gorgeous day, amazing surroundings and the feeling of freedom created by my little adventure.

Otin kuvia linnasta ja linnasta avautuvista maisemista...

Some picture taking up in the castle...

What goes up, must often come down. Easier planned than done.  For some reason my 12-cents high heels were not so practical going downhill on a natural stone path as they had been when going up. I hung on the rails (on the steepest parts of the path with two hands) and focused on placing my feet and high heels on a convenient step. My silk dress was clued to my sweaty skin, my wind-blown hair kept coming on my eyes and my big SLR hanging on my shoulder made it even more difficult to keep the balance. I got many looks from the other visitors wearing their  sporty sneakers, t-shirts and shorts. If I could read minds, the story would have been something like "Oh no, what a blonde! What was she thinking this morning when dressing up?". I did not mind the looks, I took "all is cool, everything under control"-look on my face, took deep breaths and did my best to land as much with dignity as it was possible taken into account the circumstances. Whenever I felt like calling my husband to come and carry me down, I stopped, gather strength from the view below and hummed this.

Holiday Pictures: Piemonte and Liguria

Vihdoinkin sain kamerani takaisin ja kuvia käsiteltyä. Koska junat Milanoon olivat pitkän viikonlopun vuoksi täynnä, otimme junan Sveitsin ja Italian rajalle Locarnoon ja sieltä jatkoimme matkaa vuora-autolla Piemonteen. Ensimmäisenä yövyimme tässä hurmaavassa hotellissa.

Hotellilla on upea ravintola La Gallina, jonka täyteen bookatusta salista saimme iloksemme pöydän sekä viinitila Villa Sparina, jonka vuosikertaa tilasimme pullollisen.

I finally got my camera back and the images edited so here is a set of photos from our trip to Italy. As all the trains to Milan were fully booked or ridiculously expensive, we took a train to Swiss and Italian boarder, Locarno, rented a car and drove to Piemonte. The first night we stayed in  this charming hotel.

The hotel has a fantastic restaurant La Gallina which was fully booked when we arrived but the friendly hotel staff and the chef arranged a table for us. The hotel has also a high quality winery Villa Sparina so we enjoyed a bottle of red while the sun set behind the hills. The place is perfect venue for a wedding and in fact there was an American wedding party staying at the hotel at the same time. They were expecting around 60 guests to arrive for the wedding all the way from San Francisco.

***
The huge Serravalle Outlet is located just 8 kilometers from the hotel and you can spend there an inexpensive afternoon with Prada, Gucci, Salvatore Ferragamo, Dolce Gabbana and other Italian friends. Isn't it so that the more you buy in outlets, the more you save?

Seuraavaksi yöksi ajoimme alas Liguriaan Cinque Terreen.

For the second night we drove straight down to Cinque Terre, Liguria. The hotel we stayed at belogns to the category "I thought these days were gone" but what else you can expect if you book the hotel in a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the same day on a high season weekend. Two of the five small and picturesque villages can only be reached by train, by boat or walking. Cinque Terre is made for hiking but as this time we left the baby carrier at home so we just took a boat from one village to another and otherwise used trains. It is clear now that we have to go back asap so we will still be able to carry Pancho or we will have to wait 7-8 years until Pancho will be able to walk the entire 12 kilometers hike himself and climb all the stairs. We missed most of the villages as it was impossible to move around with push chairs.

***
After Cinque Terre we continued to Camogliaan and treated ourselves with this. We ate a romantic dinner on the beach under the stars, Pancho ate his best meal  during the whole trip: a scampi curry. We chose to hotel for its swimming pool but next day when we just got to the pool, the sky went dark and it started to rain so we headed to Portofino (more on Portofino tomorrow).

From Portofino we drove back to Piemonte, stayed in a lovely and cozy agriturismo on rural runned by two generations.  We had 7 courses surprise dinner (that was the only thing on the menu, at very reasonable price of 25 euros!) in their restaurant. Pancho loved this place as there was plenty of room to run and play in the garden, they had  children's swings, slides and a swimming pool. All in all it was a perfect long weekend in Italy and we would love to go back soon.

Fresh and Flirty

Maaliskuussa kerroin teille 6 asiaa japanilaisista vessoista. Tämä vessajuttu on Italiasta. Olen yöpynyt alkeellisissa hostelleissa ja nukkunut ylellisissä viiden tähden hotelleissa 45 eri maassa. Olen oppinut, että hotellien tason pystyy usein päättelemään siitä, minkälaista kosmetiikkaa/muuta tilbehööriä on tarjolla. On ollut shamppoota, hoitoainetta, suihkusaippuaa, kosteusvoidetta, ompelutarvikkeita, kylpysuolaa, hammasharjoja, partateriä, kampoja, pumpulia, vanupuikkoja, kengänkiillostusvälineitä, suihkumyssyjä, vartalonkuorintaa, suuvettä, kynsiviiloja, huulirasvaa, hiuslenkkejä, meikinpoistoainetta, kynsilakanpoistolappuja ja tahranpoistoainetta mutta Italiassa löysin jotakin, mihin en ollut aiemmin hotellissa törmännyt...
***
In March, I shared 6 things you should know about Japanese toilets. This story comes from Italy. I have traveled and stayed in very basic hostels and I have slept in luxurious five-star hotels in 45 different countries. I have learnt that the quality of a hotel can often be seen on the toiletries available. There has been shampoo, hair conditioner, shower gel, body moisturizer, bath salts, toothbrushes, combs, razors, cotton balls, Q tips, shoe polish kits, shower caps, sewing kits, body scrubs, nail files, lip balm, mouth water, hair loops, make-up remover, nail polish remover and stain remover but in Italy I found something which I had not previously come across...

...Intiimisaippuaa!
***
...Intimate soap!

Mitä muuta hauskaa teille on hotelleissa tarjottu?
***
Is there a need for an intimate soap because A) Italians are so passionate lovers, B) the hotels where these products were available are especially popular wedding venues and places to stay for a honey moon or C) do Italians just use more soap than the rest of the world? What do you think? Have you seen intimate soap somewhere else? Have you seen other extraordinary or surprising toileteries in a hotel?

Lost and Found

Kuvia viinitilalta Piemontessa missä yövyimme, upeasta resortista missä hemmottelimme itseämme, herkullisista lounaista, tunnelmallisista illallisista, aurinkoisesta laivamatkasta, Cinque Terren kylistä, Panchosta poolilla, maisemista jossa lenkeilimme ja hengästyimme paitsi huonosta kunnosta myös huikeista maisemista, linnasta johon kiipesin 12 sentin korkokengillä Portofinossa, Panchosta pelaamassa palloa, perheen yhteisistä hetkistä.

Three weeks ago Pepper, Pancho, my dad and I spent a weekend in Lake Geneva. On Sunday evening on our way back home we stopped in Bern to have dinner. After having the dinner we continued driving to Basel. When leaving the city, we were happy about the direction we were heading to as the traffic towards Bern was completed jammed due to some road work. After driving an hour and just about 10 minutes before arriving home, I noticed that I had left my SRL camera in the restaurant. There was the phone number in the restaurant bill so I called immediately and as soon as got a confirmation tha the camera is still there, we turned around and drove back about 90 kilometers until we got stuck in the same traffic jam we had been bemoaned about previously. After spending 30 minutes on the last 10 kilometeres, we got there just in time before they closed the restaurant. I got my camera back and we hit the road for another extra 100 kilometeres.

Last Sunday, after a lovely holiday in Italy, we had been for a while on a train from Locarno to Basel when all of the sudden I realized that I didn't have my camera with me. My last memory of the camera was in an cafe in a small town, Cannobio, in Italy, close to Swiss boarder. Not me nor Pepper remembered the name of the cafe and as we had paid in cash, we had no receipt from the place.  Sherlok Holmes-skills were needed again: I checked Google maps' restaurant service. - no results for the cafe. I checked Tripadvisor. - no results for the cafe. Had to think. Google Street View! I searched the parking place where we had parked and started to "walk" in the street view the same route we had walked just a couple of hours earlier. I found the cafe, zoomed to its awning to get the name. Bingo! Googled the name but no results. Googled it again but still no results. I zoomed the street view again to see the name of the neighbouring restaurant in its awning. Googled the name, got the phone number. The person who answered the phone did not speak or spoke only little the languages I speak i.e. English, Finnish, Spanish, Swedish or French and I speak only little the languages she knew i.e. Italian or German but using a handy language "insalata mixta" (=mix of all the above language, having the German as the prevailing language) I managed to understand that the camera was not in the cafe. What a dissappointment! I almost bursted into tears for loosing the camera but especially for loosing all the pictures I had taken. Pictures from  a  stunning hotel and vinery in Piedmont,  gorgeous resortin Gamoglio, tasty lunches, romantic dinners, sunny boat trip, Cinque Terre villages, Pancho playing ball, Pancho swimming, breath taking landscapes,  the castle in Portofino where I climbed with my 12 cm high heels,  all those moments with our little family!

I was ready to hopp off from the train, take another train back to Locarno, take a taxi to Italy and investigate what has happened to my camera. I was sure that if I could only get there, I would find the camera. Pepper did not let me get off the train in the middle of nowhere at 9 pm. I could not believe that they did not find my camera. After some tense tens of kilometers, I calmed down and Pepper and I focused on our memories where and when we had seen the camera for the last time. All of the sudden both of us were sure that I still had the camera when we left the cafe and headed to Swiss boarder. I raised a hope that we have forgotten the camera in the rental car.

Yesterday morning I called sharp 8:00 to Locarno's rental car office and explained the situation again speaking my insalata mixta (this time having Spanish as the prevailing language). I was holding my breath when listening how the guy on the phone took the keys from the box where we had left it the previous night, walked through the parking lot, opened the car doors, rusteled, rattled and then said the most beautiful three words: "it is here". What a relief! In addition he told me that one of his colleagues is coming to Basel next Tuesday and could bring the camera. I will save 9 hours trip and at least 80 francs. How about those pictures? Well, I will share them with you next week!
