New Pillow on the Floor

Tältä se näytti vintage liikkeessä.

This is how it looked like in a vintage shop.

Ja tältä se näyttää meidän olohuoneessa.

And this is how it looks like in our living room.

Eikö olekin ihana? Rakastan reunarypytyksiä, värejä ja tyynyyn liittyvää tarinaa.

Isn't it cute? I love the colors, the ruffle and the story how we got it.

When we were in Paris, we visited a small vintage shop where I found a cool floor cushion. The cushion was too big to be taken with me in the train but after a short chat with the owner, she told me that she would be the following weekend in Belfort which is located only 40 kilometers from Basel. There is a huge flea/vintage/antiques street market every first Sunday of the month and it is considered one of the TOP 5 flea markets in France. She promised to take the cushion to Belfort in her car in case I wanted. I took a couple of pictures and started to convince Mr. Pepper to buy it. I did not have a place where to put it but as the cushion remotely looks like Missoni pattern, it was easier to convince him than I expected. On that weekend our dear friend Mr Tuna was visiting us from Finland so we all hopped in a car and drove to France. There is a fortress in Belfort and all the small streets around it were closed for the traffic and filled with sellers and happy buyers.

I found Cecile (the owner of the vintage shop in Paris) by coincidence in the first corner just when we arrived and in addition to the cushion, she had a beautiful selection of vintage clothes and shoes from Chanel, Dior, Hermés. I also found Louboutin and Louis Vuitton shoes which would unfortunately not be the case in the Finnish flea markets.

Myynnissä oli myös herkullisia huonekaluja, hauskoja leluja, kauniita astioita, erikoisia tauluja, vaikka mitä kippoja, toisia mokomia kuppeja, isoja peilejä, you name it, they have it! Tyynyn lisäksi löysimme Pepperille antiikkisen shampanja coolerin ja Pancholle mitä ihanimman lelun: puisen rumpalipojan, joka rummuttaa, kun lelua vetää narusta perässään. Pancho sai lelun heti käyttöönsä ja herätti ihastuneita huokauksia ja hyväntahtoista naurua ohikulkijoiden joukossa. Lapsen riemu on tarttuvaa!

We also found cool furniture, funny toys, original frames, big mirrors, beautiful glasses, old botlles, you name, they have it. Pepper found an antique champagne cooler for him and Pancho got the most charming toy: a wooden drummer who drums when he pulls the string. Pancho played with his new (old) toy the whole afternoon and got many smiles from the people around. The joy of a child is contagious!

Kierreltyämme ja tutkittuamme kaikki ihanat tarjolla olleet aarteet, nautimme hurmaavan ranskalaisen lounaan eräässä aukiota kehystävistä ravintolassa. Jos ikinä olet lähellä Belfortia kuun ensimmäinen sunnuntai, aamupäivä markkinoilla on visiitin arvoinen!

After exploring the market, we had a pleasant French lunch in one of the restaurants surrounding the square. It was such a beautiful Sunday, if you will ever be around on the first Sunday of the month, it is definitely worth of a visit!

Little Stories

Etsiskelin erästä paperia ja tulin samalla siivonneeksi arkistojani. Vastaan tuli kirjekuori, jossa oli pieni kokoelmani eri maiden ulkoilmakirpputoreilta haalituista sympaattisista valokuvista/
valokuvapostikorteista. Skannailin teille suosikkini. Nämä saavat mielikuvitukseni valloilleen miettiessäni tarinoita ja hetkiä kuvien takana.

I was looking for an important document and went through my archives. I did find what I was looking for but I also found an envelope with my small collection of sweet black&white pictures I have bought in outdoor flea markets.  I scanned my favorites. These make my imagination wild when I try to guess stories behind the pictures and moments.

Onko taustalla itse supermies viittoineen?

These cute little Mexican girls were the first spark for me to start collecting such photos. I found the photo in La Lagunilla antiques market in Mexico City. Ever since I have spent time in flea markets rooting through dusty shoeboxes full of old pictures. Is there the superman itself in the background?

Komeat viikset kasvattanut isä ja nappisilmäinen pikkupoika löytyivät Buenos Airesin Mercado de las Pulgas-antiikkimarkkinoilta. Kuvan takana on ilmeisesti pojan myöhemmin kirjoittama liikkis teksti: "Rakkaalle isukilleni sydämeni kaikella hellyydellä. 12.4.1937, Rubens Daniel" Jos liikutte Buenos Airesissa päin, Mercado de las Pulgas on virkistävä vaihtoehto San Telmon markkinoille vaikka San Telmon Brasserie Petanque tarjoileekin mielestäni maailman parasta tartar-pihviä.

A man with handsome handlebar mustache and little boy on a bench was found in Mercado de las Pulgas-antiques market in Buenos Aires. There is a hand written text behind the picture (most likely written by the boy afterwards): "To my dear daddy with all the tenderness of my heart. 12 April 1937, Rubens Daniel". By the way if you are around BsAs, Mercado de las Pulgas is refreshing option for San Telmo market even though Brasserie Petanque makes the best tartar beef in the world.

"12.10.1952 Rakkaalle isoäidillemme kaikella hellyydellä hänen nimipäivänään. Toivottavasti sinulla on mukavaa koko sinua rakastavan perheesi kanssa emmekä enää suututa sinua. -Jorge ja Luismar". Barcelonan katumarkkinoilta.

"12 October 1952 To our beloved grandmother with all our love on your name day. We hope you will enjoy the day with all the family who loves you and who will hopefully not make you angry anymore. -Jorge and Luismar". From street market in Barcelona.

Rudyn poika ja kaksostytöt perheen joulutervehdyksessä. Brooklyn Fleamarketista.

Rudy's son and twin daughters in season's greeting. From Brooklyn Fleamarket.

P.S. Olen yrittänyt keksiä miten nämä kuvat saisi tyylikkäästi esille ilman että näyttävät piperrykseltä (pahinta mitä Pepper sisustuksessa tietää, on piperrys...) Tuleeko sinulle mieleen millaisen kollasin näistä voisi tehdä?

The last picture I found from our own "shoebox full of old family pictures and postcards". This is a postcard, not a family picture as the others above but the lady stretching on the beach was so lovely, I included it to my collection. The postcard was sent from La Baule and the sender writes that she has "enjoyed sun baths with all her body and soul".

Charming pictures and texts, aren't they? I just wonder what will remain to be sold in future flea markets of our emails, text messages, digital photos, tweets and status updates...?

P.S. I have tried to figure out what to do with these pictures. I would like to have them as a part of decoration without looking trash. Any ideas how to make a beautiful collage?
