Getting Pretty for the New Year

On hyvä aloittaa uusi vuosi kiillotettuna.   Huolimatta siitä, missä asumme tai oleilemme, perheemme tukat leikataan siis  Suomen Turussa paitsi kerran, kun Panchon kiharat leikattiin San Diegossa, super söpössä Pigtails & Crewcuts lastenkampaamossa.

Happy New Year and greetings from an airport lounge. Two weeks of happy moments with our loved ones in Finland are behind but before Pancho and I get to Switzerland, we still have some nice 5.5 hours between the flights at Frankfurt Airport ahead of us. Unfortunately Pepper had to take another route so now when Pancho is having a siesta in his push chair, I have good time to go through all the pictures I took and think about our lovely Christmas break.

If you consider Finland expensive, you should go to Switzerland. -Finland will quickly start feeling inexpensive. Whenever we go 'home', we try to make all the major purchases and get all the services done in Finland. One of those is getting our hair cut, except once when Pancho's got his "My first haircut"-experience in Pigtails & Crewcuts in San Diego.

***
Pancho chose the fire truck but there were also a police car, convertible and an airplane.

Ikimuistoisesta kokemuksesta sai hiustupsulla ja kuvalla varustetun "Ensimmäinen tukanleikkuuni"-todistuksen ja kampaamon hyllystä tarttui mukaan lasten luomu hiusvaha, jota suittiin kultakutrin vallattomiin kiharoihin joululomankin juhlatilaisuuksissa.
***
Pancho was so proud of his "First Haircut"-diploma. They even clued some hair and a picture with it!
It was a remarkable experience and I also got him a natural styling balm for babies which became handy for all the Christmas and New Year's Eve parties.

Happy Holidays!

Parikymmentä vuotta sitten siskoni piirsi yllä olevan kuvan ja hänen koulunsa teetti piirrustuksesta postikortteja. Näihin kuviin, näihin tunnelmiin, Hyvää Joulua Rakkaat, Ihanat lukijani.

A couple of decades ago my sister draw the picture above and her school printed postcards of it. With this cute drawing I wish you all, my dear, sweet readers Happy Holidays and relaxing time with your loved ones.

My birthday was again in the middle of the darkest time of the year. This year it was special as we had just returned home from our travels, I totally forgot my birthday and remembered it just the (late) night before. I mentioned about it to Mr. Pepper and his face revealed that so did he. The fridge was completely empty due to our long absence but still my dear husband did prepare me an extempore surprise birthday breakfast in the morning. It was the most creative birthday breakfast ever, the card was home made in the middle of the night from left-over cards from our wedding, the "flowers" were from our olive tree and he woke up very early to get a croissant from the corner bakery. He even managed to find a small candle and the heart in the caffe latte was the cutest!

P.S. Check the beautiful lyrics of the Mexican birthday song Estas son las Mañanitas.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Tree

***
Next Thursday we will fly to Santa Claus' homeland, Finland, to spend the holidays with the family so we have kept the Christmas decoration minimal. However, I could not resist this little cutie. Tonight we will have some warm glögg, Aura cheese (I¨m sorry Monsieur Roquefort & Comp but this girl loves Aura cheese) with home made ginger breads, we will light the candles in the tree and sit on the sofa to enjoy the twinkle of our little tree.

I've got the brains, he got the looks

Siis P-A-L-A K-A-A-R-E-S-S-A!

Ensin olin epätoivoinen, sillä kyseessä on vasen nimetön.

My hands tremor. They have always tremored and will most likely to continue tremor. Usually I don't notice the shaking myself but sometimes my family or friends might make a note. Some years ago I went to see a doctor to find a reason for such tremor. They took a magnetic resonance imaging of my brain but did not find any abnormality. Instead the neurologist said that I have beautiful brain. At the moment I am the only person in our family who has solid proof evidence of having brain. This fact becomes handy in a dispute situation.

The tremor has never really limited my life (except in job interviews where I have to kindly refuse any offered coffee) until...today. This afternoon the tremor tricked me. I was cutting a juicy red tomato when all of the sudden I saw a piece of my finger flying. Did you hear me, a piece of my finger! I almost fainted, such a disgusting thing!

Luckily Mr. Pepper was at home. He cleaned and plastered my finger and said that I will survive. First I was desperate as it was my ring finger but now when I think about it, maybe my engagement and wedding rings will drag the attention away from the tiny hole in my finger.

Despite of a careful inspection, I did not find the piece of my finger. I just hope it did not land in the Bolognese sauce.

"If you ride like lightning, you're gonna crash like thunder"

Katsoimme viikonloppuna elokuvan Place Beyond the Pines.
***
We watched Place Beyond the Pines on Saturday. I saw the trailer four times before I encouraged myself to rent it. The thing is that me and my husband, we like movies with a happy ending. Before, during and until the very last minute of the movie we were convinced that the movie will have an endlessly sad ending. I won't reveal further details about it but I just say that it does not have such a miserable ending as we were afraid of.

Tarina on pilkottu kolmeen toisiinsa nivoutuvaan osaan, olen tämän tyyppisen kerronan ystävä.
***
As the trailer promises, the movie is about fathers, sons and the consequences. As parents of a small boy, the story touched both me and Mr. Pepper. We were touched "oh that is so sweet" type of way on the scenes with babies and their fathers and touched "oh, I hope that will never happen to our Pancho" type of way on the scenes with youngsters, their problems with life, friends and drugs.

The movie is about a motorcycle stuntman who starts to rob banks after he discovers that he has a son who he wants to take care of and a police who gets involved by coincidence. After their confortation nothing is the same. Above all, the movie is a story about how our acts and decisions might have bigger and longer consequences than we could ever imagine.

***
I think you recognize a good movie when it creates emotions and when you still think about it on the following day(s). Based on these criteria, the movie was good. The fact that I decided to write a post about it makes it, in my opinion, excellent.

***
Behind the scenes, Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes are a cuople also in the real life!

Olen aina pitänyt Bradley Cooperista, hänessä on jotain niin tuttua. Tätä elokuvaa katsoessa keksin miksi. Ladies and gentleman, iltapalaksi nämä kaksi marjaa.
***
I have always liked Bradley Cooper, he looks so familiar to me. Today I finally undestod why...ladies and gentleman, like two peas in a pod:

Ystäväni Peter/ My friend Peter                    &        Bradley Cooper

Checkmate

***
Mr. Pepper and I were talking about Pancho's Christmas presents. Along the conversation we got to a subject covering whether we provide enough stimulation for Pancho's development and whether we are teaching him enough things. Pepper was seriously concerned as he had read an article stating that kids shall start playing chess at very early age. I reminded Pepper that Pancho is still only 15 months and advised him to calm down for at least for the next three years. We decide to get for Pancho some Play Mobile, Mega Blocks and a xylophone.

Weekend

Tänä viikonloppuna aiomme poistua kotoa ainoastaan Suomikoulun joulujuhlaan sekä kävelyille kauniiseen auringonpaisteeseen. Muuten otamme rennosti, laittamme joulukoristeet, katsomme ehkä leffan, kokeilemme uutta Cesar-kastikkeen reseptiä, Pepper grillaa kanaa ja chillaillaamme koko perhe. Pancho virittäytyi jo tunnelmaan...

Hyvää viikonloppua kullannuput!
***
This weekend we will only leave home for the Christmas party of the Finland School and for walks in the beautifully sunny weather. Otherwise we will take it easy, do some Christmas decoration, maybe watch a movie, try a new Cesar-dressing recipe, Pepper will grill some chicken and  we will just chill out. Pancho is already getting into the mood...

Have a great weekend sweethearts!

Message from the President of the Republic

***
Yesterday I got a message from the president of Finland. Finland Society forwarded the message to Finland School and they forwarded it to me. The message made my day. I have always liked President Niinistö. Many years ago we both gave a speech in a same event (those days he was not yet the president) and he greeted me in a very friendly way in the hall. It made my day back then.

In his message the president wishes all expatriate Finns happy Independence Day and peacefull Christmas Season. The message is in three languages as our country has two official languages and some of the expatriate Finns or their  descendants might not speak Finnish or Swedish anymore. The only thing that confused me was the order of the messages in the email. First the message was in English, then in Swedish and the last in Finnish. Maybe they wanted to save the best for last but still it makes me wonder that shouldn't it be (on Finland's Independece Day and as a message coming from associations which promote Finnish language) first in Finnish, then in Swedish and the last in English? What do you think?

Anyway, the message made me happy in all three language and I would also like to wish to all Finns home and abroad hyvää itsenäisyyspäivää, en god självständinghetsdag and happy Independence  Day!

The California Highlight

Sokerina pohjalla Kalifornian kohokohtien kohokohta: Ojai Valley.
***
To save the best for last, the highlight of our trip was a stay in Ojai Valley Inn & Spa. Only a day before we left home for California, we made a last-minute change to the itinerary and based on the recommendation from Pepper's boss, we decided to deviate from the coast and visit Ojai. That was an excellent decision as Ojai Valley was magical.

***
You may spend a day, weekend or a week in Ojai Valley Inn & Spa and you will enjoy every moment. There are plenty of activities for each day: a world class golf course (Pepper enjoyed the back-9), Forbes ranked their spa one of othe best luxurious spas in the world, there are guided morning and evening walking tours, hiking, pilates, yoga, art classes, spinning, streching, two pools (one for adults only and another for families)...and on weekends there are open-air movies by the pool with popcorn.

***
Ojai Valley is one of the few valleys in the USA which is formed from east to west (we were told that normally valleys are lined up south-north mountain range). This particular shape of the valley creates a pink moment when the sun sets to the Pacific Ocean. The sun rays reflect to the mountains and the mountain reflects the rays further to the valley and brushes all the trees, land and sky with pink. The Pink Moment was magical! We enjoyed the Pink Moment from our room's terrace and the view was like this (in pink).

***
Hotel has its own herb garden and the herbs are used by the kitchen but also the Ojai Spa uses the herbs for the treatments. I tested their Lavender Sugar Body Polish which is like a body scrub but instead of salt they use sugar (with lavender of course). The spa was glorious, just the type of luxury I love.

Picture from here

Hotellilla on tehokas online chat varauspalvelu jota kautta tein varauksen. Aina kannattaa kysyä alennuksia ja special hintoja sillä vain kysymällä sain 40% alennusta huoneen (king size näköalalla) ensiksi ilmoitettuun hintaan.
***
I never thought that Ojai would be the highlight of our trip. What we liked most wast the peace and tranquility (note, we were travelling off-season). It felt as if we were so far away from all the hassle even though it is not so far away. We felt we were surrounded by nature, mountains, sunsets and healthy life. It was a perfect place for just to relax and take it easy.

I warmly recommend Ojai Valley Inn & Spa. They have an efficient online chatting reservation service, it is worth of asking for discounts and special prices, as just by asking, I managed to bargain a king size room with a view 40% cheaper than the original price given.
