Kotikaupungissamme on vain 165 000 asukasta mutta se isännöi vuosittain ainakin kaksi maailman luokan tapahtumaa, kesäkuussa nykytaiteen Art Basel täyttää kaupungin taiteen keräilijöistä ja huippugalleristeista ja maalis-huhtikuun vaihteessa Basel World houkuttaa n. 120 000 kävijää 100 eri maasta maailman suurimmille kello- ja korumessuille. Huhujen mukaan myös Brad Pitt käväisi messuilla pari vuotta sitten tapaamassa Sternin perhettä ja pääsi parin vuoden jonon ohi ostamaan 390 000 dollarilla Angelinalleen häälahjaksi Ladies Patek Philippe Minute Repeat kellon.

There are only 165 000 habitants in our home town but this small and charming city hosts two world class events every year: in June the world's most important contemporary art event Art Basel brings art lovers and collectors from all over the world and in March-April approx. 120 000 visitors from 100 countries come to see the world's biggest watch and jewelry fair Basel World. There are rumors that some years ago Brad Pitt visited the fair to meet the Stern family and after the meeting he could skip the two years long waiting list to spend 390 000 USD on a wedding present for his Angelina: Ladies Patek Philippe Minute Repeat watch.
Viime vuonna mieheni kävi yksin fiilistelemässä hienoja kelloja mutta tänä vuonna saimme yhdessä kutsun Harry Winston coctail-kutsuille. Tilaisuus alkoi klo 17 mutta menimme tuttaviemme kanssa messuille jo pari tuntia aikaisemmin kiertääksemme messualuetta. Harry Winston oli muuten ensimmäinen kultaseppä, joka lainasi timantteja Oscar gaalaan osallistuvalle näyttelijättärelle. Miten nerokas markkinointistrategia!

Last year my husband visited to fair alone just to see the watches but this year we were invited to Harry Winston cocktail party and went together. The party started at 5 pm but we wanted to see the fair so we went there a couple of hours before. Did you know that Harry Winston was the first jeweler to loan diamonds to an actress in Academy Awards? What a genius marketing strategy!
Cocktail tilaisuus oli Harry Winstonin messualueella (ks. kuva alla) ja tarjolla oli erinomaista shampanjaa, herkullisia coctail-paloja ja vielä herkullisempaa peoplewatchingia. Vieressämme seisoi mm. Swatch groupin omistaja conversen lenkkareissa ja myöhemmin illalla Harry Winstonin toimitusjohtaja Nayla Hayek saapui juhliin. Oli myös mielenkiintoista seurata miten yläkertaan marssi suoraan ovelta mm. 8 hengen japanilaisseurue isot nahkasalkut käsissä. Portaita vahtivalta vartijalta kuulin, että yläkertaan pääsee ainoastaan ajanvarauksella ja suljettujen ovien takana käydään kauppaa uudesta mallistosta. Onneksi myös alakerrassa oli esillä upeita luomuksia, mm. postauksen lopussa oleva uniikki Glacier.

The cocktail party was held in the Harry Winston salon. Excellent champagne and stylish & tasty finger food were served non-stop. In addition to the bubbles and snacks, I enjoyed the people watching. The owner of the Swatch Group was standing just next to us and later in the evening Nayla Hayek, the CEO of Harry Winston, joined the party. It was also fascinating to watch the people who went straight upstairs. A guard on the stairs told me that the admission was only by appointment. Behind the closed doors there were buyers from all over the world to see the new collection and purchase. Luckily we could also see some fabulous pieces downstairs such as the unique timepiece Glacier (see the picture at the end).

Vaikka tilaisuus oli hieno, parasta illassa oli seurue kenen kanssa saimme laseja kilistellä. Tapasimme hurmaavia ja fiksuja uusia ihmisiä, jotka toivomme tapaavamme pian uudelleen.

The event itself was amazing and we had some much fun but the best part was all those lovely, smart and charming people who we met and spent the evening with. I hope to see you guys soon again!

I have been dreaming of a formal watch to use with an evening dress. Finally I found it!
Seuraavana päivänä jatkoimme ihmisten ihailua ja hengailua messutunnelmassa messukeskuksen terasseilla. Ensi vuonna uudelleen!

The next day we continued the people watching and hanging around the exhibition hall. I will definitely come back next year!
